Angel’s Rest will always hold a special place in our hearts. Part floating bar, part floating home, it’s our favorite place to while away an afternoon with friends on St. John.

Peter, the owner, is the bar’s main attraction and one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet. Most days during the high season he wakes up, stocks the boat, and motors off his mooring in Coral Bay to drop anchor and set up shop near one of the sandy beaches. He mixes an excellent – and woah momma – strong rum punch for patrons who swim or dinghy up to the bar.

We first met Peter while on charter a few years back (there may be photographic evidence of me jumping off the roof during a private party – roof jumping is prohibited under normal circumstances) and were looking forward to seeing him, and his lovely bar, again.

With a reliably entertaining mix of vacationers and island residents,  it’s the perfect place to get a feel for what St. John is all about. One time, Brian gave some local dudes a dinghy ride back to shore in exchange for the whereabouts of their secret lobstering spot, another time, a crew of local lionfish killers stopped by for a round after their unsuccessful hunt and swapped all kinds of fascinating stories about island life.

We’re loving the south side of St. John, especially the stretch between Hansen and Coral Bays. Here, we have all the essentials – clear, beautiful water, a dog-friendly beach, good friends, and Angel’s Rest. We can’t seem to come up with any good reason to leave.
