The first day of 2017 ended with a bang, literally.
As we were getting ready to head to bed, the sound of spontaneous explosions had us running for the decks as – surprise! – fireworks erupted directly over Nightingale Tune.
Talk about a heart attack! We had to peel poor Nico off the ceiling.
I grabbed the camera to get a few shots, while trying to forget how flammable our sails are. This was the closest I’ve ever been to a major fireworks display. They were being set off on a barge in the harbor, not 400 feet from our boat, as part of an event promoting world peace.
The good news is, fireworks this close shed a lot of light, which makes them easier to photograph, even on a bobbing boat.
Nothing like terrifying explosions over your boat to close out the first day of 2017.
Great Pictures!! I am having flashbacks. This reminds me of a 4th of July on Lake Superior in Bayfield WI . Everyone sitting on the dock and the bow of the boats when the wind shifted. Thank goodness I had to go down below for something because debris had fallen in the cockpit and the flame would have only grown. We were lucky. Just like you thought lots of others had small holes in canvas and sails.
The worst moments on boats are always the ones where you feel completely helpless in certain situations – and what you’re describing sounds like one of those moments! Very lucky that you were there before anything was able to catch.
